MonaLisa Touch is the newest service offered in our office, and it is great for women who have vaginal discomforts like dryness, painful intercourse, or other menopausal symptoms. However, it can also be quite beneficial for women who experience incontinence or who have Interstitial Cystitis.
You may be asking yourself how MonaLisa Touch can help the bladder if the procedure is done inside the vagina. Well let’s take a minute to reflect on what we know about Interstitial Cystitis and what treatments work. Ladies who have Interstitial Cystitis have a tough time staying far from a bathroom– there’s frequency, extreme urgency, pain, and burning. Medication can help, as can bladder instillations, nerve therapy, and strengthening the pelvic floor through stretching or pelvic floor pilates (Pfilates).
When we treat a woman with MonaLisa Touch, one of the goals is to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. The laser sends energy deep into tissues; this stimulates the new production of collagen, blood vessels, and elastin. As this happens, tissues begin to strengthen and regain their tone. This is great for the vagina, but it’s also great for the bladder which relies on the same pelvic floor muscles we just treated. Although MonaLisa Touch was not specifically designed to help treat bladder issues, it’s a pleasant side effect we’re noticing in many of our patients. They tell us, “My symptoms have improved… but so has my bladder!” And we’re happy to hear it.
