Cinco de Mayo is a popular holiday filled with delicious food and drinks. We enjoy snacks like chips and salsa, roasted jalapenos, and we wash those snacks down with margaritas, beer with lime, and sugary drinks. And although it can be a fun (and delicious) day, these highly acidic foods can wreck havoc on your bladder if you are suffering from Interstitial Cystitis.
Salsas filled with tomatoes, jalapeno, and lime are highly acidic. As you process the foods, the acidic level of your urine can lead to bladder spasms, urinary frequency, urgency, and can leave you in the bathroom instead of enjoying your fun day. Alcohol only makes the acidity worse, and then the lack of hydration worsens things further.
On holidays like this one, we all want to kick back and enjoy the party. But don’t forget to stay hydrated– try to drink a glass of water in between drinks, and keep Prelief in your purse to help with food acidity.
Having Interstitial Cystitis does not mean you can’t go out and have fun, it just means that you need to be more careful and take precautions.
